IIIT Hyderabad’s dual degree program is fundamentally a research program. The professors on the interview panel are researchers themselves and they want to admit students who genuinely want to pursue research - not just students who want a better college name.
How to Demonstrate Research Passion
1. Be Specific About Your Area
Don’t say: “I’m interested in AI and ML.” (Too generic)
Do say: “I’m specifically interested in how transformer models handle long-range dependencies. I read the Attention is All You Need paper and found the self-attention mechanism elegant. I want to explore whether similar mechanisms work for structured data like graphs.”
2. Connect to IIITH’s Work
Visit IIITH’s faculty pages and all Research Centres before the interview. Mention specific papers, projects, or professors whose work aligns with yours. Additionally, ask the panel thoughtful questions about ongoing research directions or methodologies in their labs - this signals genuine interest and preparation, not just a rehearsed answer.
3. Describe Your Journey
Talk about:
- When you first got interested in this topic
- What you’ve done to explore it (courses, projects, self-study)
- What question you’d like to answer through research
4. Show Intellectual Curiosity
When asked a question you don’t know the answer to, demonstrate curiosity:
“I don’t know the exact answer, but let me think about it from first principles. If I consider [related concept], I would expect [reasoning]… I’d like to learn more about this - what is the actual answer?”
5. Honesty About Research Experience
Most LEEE candidates have not done prior research. This is completely fine! The interviewers know this. What matters is:
- Genuine curiosity and enthusiasm
- Clear thinking and problem-solving approach
- Willingness to work hard and learn
- Intellectual humility
6. Non-Verbal Signals of Genuine Interest
Body language matters in an interview even when the content is purely technical:
- Maintain comfortable eye contact with the panel - look at the person speaking, not just one professor

Common Pitfalls
- Vague motivation: “I want to research because it’s interesting” - not convincing

When crafting motivational answers for this interview, keep these principles in mind:
- Anchor answers in IIITH’s specific resources - name labs, faculty, and courses, not just “IIITH has good research.”
- Show progression from your current skills to what the program will enable you to achieve.

About the Mock Interviews
The unofficial mock interviews were primarily meant for practice - to help boost confidence, reduce nervousness, and make candidates more comfortable with the interview environment. The goal was to simulate the actual interview experience as closely as possible.
Key difference to note: In the real interview, there will usually be a single account through which all panel members interact with you, so you may not know how many interviewers are present.
Since these were unofficial mocks, the exact difficulty level of questions may not perfectly match the actual interview. However, a wide range of scenarios were intentionally covered across different interviews, including:
- Difficult questions and easy questions.
- Questions from weaker or non-confident topics.
- Intentionally confusing questions.
- Unclear communication and rapid questioning.
The goal was to expose candidates to different interview situations and help them understand the overall flow and pressure of the process.
Important: The mocks were comparatively lenient regarding interview duration and pacing. In the actual interview, expect a much faster-paced interaction, with quicker transitions between questions and less time to think between responses.

A Note on Interviewer Feedback
During the mock interviews, interviewers occasionally said things like “good” to encourage candidates. This may not happen in the actual interview. Interviewers might stay neutral and give no verbal affirmations - that does not mean your answer was wrong or insufficient. Don’t let the silence throw you off.
